So, often we get on social media – including LinkedIn – and write posts from our higher self, showcasing our wins or moments where we can teach someone something. We don’t often show moments when we are students, but today I am going to do just that.
I contracted the crud that has been going around and was miserably ill on Monday. I took the day because in my head, if I give it 24 hours of rest and Gatorade, hopefully I will be well enough to come in for a big presentation on Tuesday. So, on Tuesday, I wake up and feel 10% better but I try to rally for the presentation. I get dressed. I even try to come in early to make sure that I am ready to go. On the way in, I called Knight Stivender, my boss and a Partner at MP&F Strategic Communications and let her know that she didn’t have to worry, I am pulling myself together and will be there to deliver. Do you know what she said? She said, “Please don’t push yourself to come in if you’re still sick. Everyone will understand. Plus, no one else wants to be sick…” What’s funny is it’s EXACTLY what I would have said if someone on my team was ill but for some reason, I didn’t give myself that same grace.
I write this very long post to say that leaders must model the behaviors you want your team to emulate and that includes rest and wellness. So, stay home when you are sick and take your vacation days and recharge. If we want our teams to be happy, healthy and whole; we must be happy, healthy and whole.
